A real recovery service never needs your password or login codes, never guarantees the result and has no back door into Meta. If someone offers any of that, contacts you first, or wants payment up front in crypto or gift cards, it's a scam. Walk away.
How Instagram recovery scams work
People who have just lost their account are stressed, in a hurry and searching for help in public. Scammers know this. The pattern is almost always the same:
- They find you. You comment "my account got hacked" somewhere, or post under a hashtag, and within minutes accounts reply: "I got mine back thanks to @someone, he's legit."
- They look official. Names like "meta.support.team", a blue tick in the profile picture, screenshots of "recovered" accounts.
- They ask for the keys. Your password, the code Instagram just texted you, your backup codes or a video selfie "to submit to Meta".
- They take what's left. Either they lock you out for good, or they take an up-front fee and disappear. Sometimes they come back asking for more.
Six warning signs of a fake recovery service
- Claims inside access to Meta or Instagram. "I work with the support team", "my friend at Meta". Nobody honest has that, and it isn't how decisions are made.
- Guarantees the result or a fast timeline. "100% guaranteed", "back in 30 minutes". Instagram makes the final decision on every case.
- Asks for your password, login codes or backup codes. That's the one thing that turns a lost account into a stolen one.
- Wants payment up front in crypto, gift cards or untraceable transfers. These can't be reversed, which is exactly why scammers ask for them.
- Contacted you first. Real services don't hunt for victims in comment sections or DMs.
- Has no real identity. No company name, no history, a brand-new account, or reviews that all sound the same.
Real recovery service vs. scam
| Legitimate service | Scam | |
|---|---|---|
| Your password | Never asked for | Asked for early |
| Login or 2FA codes | Stay on your device | "Send me the code you just got" |
| Result | Honest odds, no guarantee | "100% guaranteed" |
| How it works | Instagram's official appeal and recovery routes | "Insider at Meta", "special tool" |
| Who makes contact | You contact them | They find you in comments or DMs |
| Payment | Clear terms agreed before work starts | Up front, in crypto or gift cards |
| Identity | Named company, public contacts, a history | Anonymous, new accounts, copy-paste reviews |
| Other people's accounts | Refused | "I can get into any account" |
Already paid or shared your password?
- Change your Instagram password right away if you still can, and turn on two-factor authentication with an authentication app.
- Secure your email account with a new password and two-factor authentication.
- Log out unknown devices from Instagram's security settings. If you've lost access, use the hacked-account steps.
- Contact your bank or payment provider immediately and ask about a chargeback or blocking further payments.
- Report the scammer's account to Instagram, and report the fraud to your local police or national fraud reporting service.
- Watch out for "recovery of the recovery" scams. People who've been scammed once are often targeted again by "fund recovery agents". It's the same scam.
How to check a recovery service before you trust it
Ask these questions. A real service will answer them without hesitation:
- Who are you? What's the company name, and since when have you been working?
- Will you ever need my password or login codes? (The only right answer is no.)
- Which official Instagram process will you use for my case?
- What happens if it doesn't work? What exactly am I paying for, and when?
- Can you guarantee the result? (The only honest answer is no.)
Frequently asked questions
Can someone at Meta recover my Instagram account for a fee?
No. Nobody honest has insider access to Meta, and Instagram makes the final decision on every case through its own appeal and recovery processes.
Does a real recovery service need my password or login codes?
Never. Your password, login codes and backup codes are what turn a lost account into a stolen one. A legitimate service works through Instagram's official routes without them.
I already paid a recovery scammer. What should I do?
Contact your bank or payment provider straight away about a chargeback or blocking further payments, secure your Instagram and email accounts, report the scammer to Instagram and report the fraud to the police.
Are "fund recovery agents" who contact me after a scam legitimate?
Treat them as the same scam. People who have been scammed once are often targeted again by "recovery of the recovery" offers.
