Instagram reach dropped? Account Status, recommendation limits and the "shadowban" explained

Short answer

Open Account Status in the Instagram app first. It shows content Instagram removed and whether your content and account can be recommended to people who don't follow you. If something is flagged, remove it or request a review from Account Status. If nothing is flagged, the drop is more likely to come from normal changes in what your audience engages with.

Is the "shadowban" real?

Instagram doesn't use the word "shadowban". What it does have are recommendation limits: your posts can still reach your followers, but may not be recommended to people who don't follow you, in places like Explore, Reels and suggestions in Feed. Instagram has also added information on whether your account can be recommended in Search and Suggested Accounts.

Instagram's Recommendations Guidelines are stricter than its Community Guidelines. So a post can be allowed on Instagram and still not be eligible to be recommended.

Step 1: Open Account Status

Account Status lives in the app's settings. Depending on your app version you'll find it in the menu under settings and activity, or under help and support. Instagram moves menus occasionally, so search the settings for "Account Status" if you can't see it.

Step 2: Read what it tells you

  • Removed content: posts, stories or comments Instagram took down, and why.
  • Recommendation eligibility: whether your content can be recommended to non-followers.
  • Account recommendations: whether your account can appear in Search or Suggested Accounts.
  • Features you can't use: temporary limits on things like following, commenting or going live.

Step 3: Fix the cause or request a review

  1. If a post was flagged and you agree it breaks the rules, delete or edit it.
  2. If you think Instagram got it wrong, open the item under removed content in Account Status and tap Request a review.
  3. Check the progress later in Account Status or in your Support Inbox.
  4. Avoid posting similar content while the review is open.

Step 4: Rule out normal causes

If Account Status shows nothing, the drop may not be a penalty at all. Instagram ranks Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels differently, using signals such as what people engage with and how they interact with you. Changes in how often you post, which formats you use and who your audience is can all move reach significantly.

What doesn't help

  • Buying followers, likes or comments. Inauthentic activity can make things worse, not better.
  • Automation and "growth" tools that follow, like or comment for you.
  • Anyone selling a "shadowban removal" that needs your login. Nobody outside Instagram can switch recommendations back on.

Frequently asked questions

Does Instagram shadowban accounts?

Instagram doesn't use the term, but it can limit whether your content or account is recommended to people who don't follow you. Account Status shows whether that is happening to you.

Where do I find Account Status?

In the Instagram app's settings. The exact menu depends on your app version, so search the settings for "Account Status" if you can't find it.

How do I appeal a post Instagram removed?

Open the removed item in Account Status and tap Request a review. You can follow the progress in Account Status or your Support Inbox.

Can a paid service remove a shadowban?

No outside service can change Instagram's recommendation settings for you. What can help is fixing the content that was flagged and using Instagram's own review process.
