Deleted or deactivated Instagram account: what you can still get back

In short

If the account was temporarily deactivated, logging back in brings it back. If someone asked Instagram to delete it, logging back in before the deadline cancels the request: Instagram permanently deletes the profile and its information 30 days after the request, and the number of days you can cancel varies by region. After that, the account can't be restored; you can only sign up again, with the same username if nobody has taken it. Posts you deleted yourself stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days. If Instagram disabled the account, that's a different process: an appeal.

Deactivated, deleted or disabled: which is it?

These words get mixed up, but they lead to completely different routes:

What happenedWho started itCan it come back?
Temporarily deactivatedSomeone logged in to the accountYes: log back in to reactivate it.
Deletion requested, deadline not passedSomeone logged in to the accountYes: log back in before the deadline to cancel.
Deleted, deadline passedSomeone logged in to the accountNo. You can only sign up again.
Disabled or suspendedInstagramSometimes, through an appeal.

If you see a notice saying Instagram suspended or disabled your account, nothing here applies: go straight to what to do when your account is suspended or disabled.

If the account was deactivated

Temporary deactivation is a pause. According to Instagram's Help Center, your photos, comments and likes are hidden until you reactivate the account by logging back in.

  • To come back, log in. There's no separate form for reactivating.
  • Once a week. Instagram says you can only deactivate your profile once a week, so if you reactivate and want another break straight away, you may have to wait.
  • You need your login. Instagram says you have to be able to log in to deactivate, and you come back by logging in. If you've forgotten the password or lost the email or phone on the account, solve that first: lost access to your email or phone.

If someone asked Instagram to delete it

Deletion is final once it completes: Instagram says your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers are permanently removed. Before that, there's a waiting period:

  • 30 days. After 30 days from the deletion request, your profile and all your information are permanently deleted and can't be retrieved. During those 30 days the content isn't accessible to other people on Instagram.
  • The cancel window depends on your region. Instagram notes that the number of days you can cancel an account deletion varies by region, so go by the date you were shown when the request was made, not by a rule of thumb.
  • Cancelling means logging back in. Instagram's Help Center says you can cancel a deletion request before the 30-day deadline by logging back into your Instagram account.
  • Up to 90 days to finish. The deletion process itself can take up to 90 days, and copies can remain for a while in backup storage or where Instagram keeps information for legal issues, terms violations or harm prevention. That doesn't mean the account can still be restored.

Once the deadline has passed, Instagram can't bring the account back. What's left:

  • Sign up again. Instagram says you can use the same username, or add it to another profile, as long as nobody else has taken it in the meantime.
  • Unless the profile broke the rules. If it was removed for violating Instagram's Community Standards, you may not be able to sign up again with the same username.
  • No more export. After deletion you no longer have access to Instagram's Export your information tool.

Deleted posts, reels and stories: check Recently Deleted

If the account is fine but content you deleted is gone, look in Recently Deleted first. Instagram says content you choose to delete is removed from your account immediately and moved there:

  • It stays in Recently Deleted for 30 days, or up to 24 hours for stories that aren't in your story archive, and is then deleted automatically.
  • During that time you can restore it, or delete it for good, from Recently Deleted in the Instagram app for Android and iPhone.

If it wasn't you

Instagram says it can't delete a profile for you, and that you need to be able to log in to request deletion; the same goes for deactivating. So if your account was deactivated or put up for deletion without you, someone else had your login. Treat it as a hacked account:

  1. Get back in through Instagram's hacked-account route: Instagram account hacked: how to get it back. Logging back in is also what cancels a pending deletion, so don't wait.
  2. Once you're in, change the password, turn on two-factor authentication and log out every device you don't recognise.
  3. Check the email address, phone number and username on the account.

Anyone who offers to "restore a deleted account" for a fee after the deadline is lying: Instagram itself says the information can no longer be retrieved. More on this: how to spot recovery scams.

Before you delete: export your information

Thinking about deleting? Export a copy first, because the tool disappears with the account. In the Instagram settings:

  1. Open Accounts Center (some people see Meta Account instead), then Your information and permissions.
  2. Choose Export your information, then Create export, and select the profile.
  3. Choose Export to device (or to an external service), pick the information, date range, format and media quality, then Start export.

Instagram says it can take up to 30 days to email you an export link, and once an export is ready you have 4 days to download it from Available downloads. If you only need a break, temporary deactivation keeps everything.
